fuel filter housing

I bought a 96 model 4 door F-250 with only 8,400 miles on it in 1997. At 100,354 miles, the fuel filter housing sprung a leak out the bottom of the housing. It looks like a casting imperfection. Dealer says tough but you are out of warranty and thank you for purchasing a new one from us. List price $500 plus. According to the dealer I was the only one in the area that had this problem. They say this is the first one they have sold a filter housing to a non salvaged vehicle. OK should have bought the extended warranty. Cleaned all the parts that had to be swapped over and put the new housing on with new rubber hoses. Fine. Great. At 165,000 miles the second filter housing springs a leak. This time the dealer says they sell "several" of these things a year. No warning lights except water in fuel which I took care of each time.

Any ideas or suggestions as to the cause of this?

I've got a buddy with a 97 PSD. One day a few months back his filter housing decided to crack and start leaking. We never did figure out why, but the new one is still holding.

I am begining to lean towards cavitation. It is kinda stranges how it looks. The first one I had to buy did not come with anything "bolted on." I had to transfer everthing over. The second one came with EVERTHING already assembled and ready to install. Even a new filter. Maybe more and more people are starting to have this trouble with them. I have only used Marvel Mystery Oil an additive. More on the first filter housing than the second.
