If any knows about heavy equipment im needing some advice for my buissness. Im a sub contractor for AT&T and I have the uverse contract and needing advice on a piece of equipment for lifting. I have to set 6x6 foot concrete slabs that weigh 2800 lbs and steel cabinets that weigh 800 lbs. The guy I hired from a competing company that's been doing uverse for 4 years told me he needed a mini excavator. Well I rented him a Mini excavator and he keeps using it for digging the trenches for the pipe with it and hitting lines which is costing me thousands $$$$. I keep telling him to use the laborers for the digging. AT&T doesn't allow machinery to dig because of these hazards. Since these issues I have purchased a boom truck that only extends out to 30 feet which isn't enough for some sites. Basically what I need is a piece of equipment that can lift heavy objects fairly high and doesn't have the ability to dig. Ex. the 6x6 suspended by 4 8 foot straps. basically an off road forklift. Looked at skid steers already but they don't lift high enough or boom out.
Simple fix: Tell him if he can't follow your rules you will fire him and get someone that can, it's that simple. You shouldn't have to go out of your way to find a piece of equipment that only does one thing to keep him from going against what you tell him to do. It's your business, not his.

I would tell him that but you have no idea how difficult it was to get someone who knows this work. I had to increase his pay by 20% and buy him the truck he wanted to get him away from the other company.
He knows he's valuable. All I can do to prevent him from screwing up is have the boom truck and me personally deliver and set every piece of equipment.
I'd put somebody you trust with him to learn that aspect of the business as fast as possible. Sounds like the current arrangement isn't going to end well. It's just a matter of when.

He refuses to train anyone. He's not stupid. Job security.
Take the bucket off the excavator and put on a hook or something that wont dig.
that is what i would do.
and tell him if he puts a bucket back on it and hits anymore lines, they are on his dime.
then have him sign the contract, and have it notarized.
after he has to pay two-three fines he will most likely learn his lesson.
I already talked to the rental company about that. They then asked the question what are you doing with the equipment. Told me that's not the intended purpose of the machine. Won't rent it to me without bucket. I have no idea how to take it off or if you can take it off. Have the boom truck now. But thinking of selling and getting a larger one. But then to get my time back I'll need to hire someone to drive and operate the boom truck. I can't keep driving it and not getting my work accomplished.
How often do you change sites? If you're on site for more than a couple days at a time it might be worth it for you to have the rental company deliver a zoom boom to you and pick it up as well.
