I'm trying to make motor mounts for my 64, as you all probly knowI have put a volare front end on it. I plan on running a small block ford 289/302. Can someone take a measurement from the front crossmember to the middle of the crank so that my fan will come out right. I cannot look at it to find out because there is no sheet metal period. Alsomaby take a measurement to how far back the motor sits. Thanks for all your help.
I am currently installing a 351W in my 64. I had the engine in and the custom mounts welded in but the drive shaft supplier shorted me by 1/2". I had to cut the mounts out and will be reinstalling them this weekend.
I can provide measurements but our setups may be different.
I have installed a MII crossmember and I am trying to sit the engine as low as possible by using a double sump Ford Pan. My 351w uses a 2" fan spacer to clear the lower 3 row pully as well.
Now the first time it was installed, My fan located about 3/4" forward and would hit the radiator when installed, so I was going to use an electric fan. This time, I may get it to clear.
List your current setup and maybe we can compare them.
Look up this link. They sell some beefy crossmembers for cheap. The tubes are 1/8 inch thick and have plenty of stock left to be able to cut and weld into your frame. Well let me say just email me and I will send you the link.
I Was needing a measurement so that I would not need to run a electric fan. I'm pretty shure that a pre made crossmember would not work because of the power steering box on the volare. But a set of 88 musang headers from flowtech might work. What I have now is a 65 289 block with a front sump, thinking I might need a bronco rear sump. With 66 heads. Have mustang k code headers also to play with.
I'd put the core support on, and just the fenders with a few bolts finger tight. Then set the ingine in there supporting it on blocks of wood and be sure there are no problems. Using the Volare clip is common so if you got the axle center line in the right spot for the fenders, there should be plenty of room for a fan.
I managed to get mine back in last night. Even though I raised the engine 1/2" and slid it back another 1/2", my radiator still hits the fan. I also used a rear sump pan. Although our setups are different, you may look into getting a new radiatior anyway with intregal trans cooler. Order one that will allow the radiator to fit between the brackets and it should clear. I will be checking into one this afternoon at my local radiator shop.
We have done 2 volare's in 61-64 trucks. Usually that large steering box is in the way. With a small-block Ford, you will have to relocate the oil filter to get the engine back enough to not hit the radiator. Ford makes a 90 degree adaptor that helps. We used a remote filter on my son's 63 with a 302. Mounted the filter on the inside of the frame, ran hoses to the engine adaptor, all done!
