when did ford start putting the ZF 5 speed into 3/4 ton 4x4's, I found a 87 or 88, something like that with a 5 speed, trans code is Z, trying to find out what this is, I don't want the wimpy mazda tranney, it is behind a small block, how would I tell by looking at it also, thanks,
Bill

If it's a 3/4 ton with a 5 speed, it's a ZF. To my knowledge, Ford never put the Mazda in anything bigger than a half ton. Also, I believe the trans code you're looking at is a 5, not a Z. The Mazda has a code of M.

The mazda's trans code is M, but you still need to watch out because ford did in fact, put the the mazda into many 3/4 ton trucks. But I believe that was only with the 5.0 engine and not the 4.9 or 5.8 which were only offered with the ZF in 3/4 ton or 1 ton frames.

Mazda 5 speeds can be found in the light duty 3/4 tons. They had 302s and only a semi floating rear end. ZF tranys have the angled cross hatch ribbing on the sides of their case.
