My wife is getting onto driving our 63 f100 with 3 on the tree. But just like many others who haven't driven a lot of standard shifts, she gets nervous when she if feeling hurried or pressured from other drivers. Last week she was driving and stopped at a stop sign and I realized she was in third and not first. I pointed it out before she started out, and in a hurry to switch, it ended up jammed into third. I ended up shutting it off and crawling under it and flipping it out of third. Never has happened to me. Is this a sign of it being out of adjustment with the linkage? Any help is appreciated.
Look at the Z bar(both the ball bushings and the shift rod bushing, linkage rods themselves for bent or binding conditions, their connecting points for excessive wear and or broken or missing bushings etc.., body mounts may be "flat" and this changes the linkage spacing somewhat, check the condition of the syncros,...in other words you'll have to go over it stem to stern looking for the problem in the 50 year old tranny. Some people find excessive play in the column linkage - in that case you can go to a floor shifter or try to locate replacement parts. Have you got a shop manual?
Wolfracing, You are describing a very common issue of that era. My wife used to have issues too. I swapped in a C6 and let it shift it's own gears. As noted wear, rust and cab sinking, all add to it.
The truck uses a H shift pattern many times peeps shift like N. Try this, it doesn't cost a thing, over compensate the shifting pattern. With palm facing you starting in 1st gear pull the lever back towards you, lift it completely out headed towards reverse, let it lever head towards the floor then lift into 2nd. Do the same coming back to 1st. Things below are worn, palm down N shifting pulls it together instead of separate.
Usually it's the arm closest to the firewall that is stuck. Get a spare claw hammer to keep in the truck. Next time it gets stuck raise the hood place the hammer claws over the close arm and lift it by tugging, you should feel it free up, close the hood & start again. My wife used the hammer on occasion but once I got the hang of it never used it.
I will be replacing the cab mounts in front soon, and I never thought of that. It is always fine for me, but I pretty much two finger it and just feel my way into every gear. I'm kind of proud of her picking it up so quickly. I don't know any other women that can drive standard on the tree. As soon as I got under it and just touched the lever going into the trans, it flopped right over. Perhaps I will get the cab mounts done before I get too excited about anything. Someday the 55' will be done and that is hers anyhow. 454 and TH400 going into that one. Lots of work to do though.
Thank you guys for your direction!
