ok guys, I have a K&N, got it for Christmas.....never had any pining. I do now hear thje classic lifter/vavle tap that 2.9's are said to be prone to. ....so you're saying the K&N can be the cause of this? (I thought it was time for an oil change I have almost 5K on it...(yes its full synthetic)

Your 2.9 doesa not have a MAF to get dirty from the filter oil unless you have a 90s california engine or have done Bob Marr's MAF conversion.

sorry Ken I know i dont have a MAF but in general if they let more junk into the engine that cant be a good thing right? are there any problems it can cause for a 2.9? I had heard good things about the K&N's thats why I bought one for christmas.....don't want anything to happen to my baby.

I ran one in my 1988 5.0 Mustang for years with no problems.

I used to have a cone S&B Powerstack filter supplied with the KKM True-Rev intake kit, but removed it after hitting a puddle of water and my engine began bogging down from all the water entering into the intake. I then went back to my airbox, but removed the silencer tube at the front of the box, and installed a K&N panel filter. This gave me more peace of mind that it is actually filtering rather than passing debris.

I will agree that the cone filter is probably more damaging to use due to it's open element design, which would allow for more contact with anything thrown into the engine compartment. However, by using the panel filter in the factory airbox, I at least have a limited source of entry, which helps prevent mud or water from collecting on the filter, and I still get the improved filtering and airflow from the K&N filter design.

I have run some type of cotton-gauze filter since day one of owning my truck (it now has 53K miles,) and I have never experienced any type of pinging. I would have to say this is either not related to cotton-gauze filters, or if it is, it is related to the over-oiling of those filters. Also, I've only cleaned my MAF once, and that was only because I read about it needing to be done just to ensure maximum engine efficiency (a clean MAF allows for a better air/fuel ratio than a dirty one.)
