steering adjustment

I have been having a steering wandering issue. The truck wanders left to right with steering play while driving. I have replaced the ball joints and had a mechanic check the front end. he told me the steering box is prob bad. I have been adjusting the box with small increments at a time. I did an adjustment Sunday and went about 1/4 in more than the last time. It was good for 1 day. It did not wander and still had the snap back needed in a turn. Now the steering went back to the play it had before. So Have anyone had this issue where it seems to be not holding the adjustment? or am I maybe not moving the adjustment enough to begin with? looking for any suggestions. thanks

if the jam nut is tight then,then I would think your finishing off whats left of the gears in the gearbox.Red head gearbox is a popular option,do a search here on that one .
