Before I go taking things apart, I like to have some idea of what order I'm going to approach the problem. So I'd like to ask opinions on two areas of need.
#1. I can open the passenger door from the inside, but not the outside.
#2. When I first turned the wipers on, they operated briefly and then stopped. All the exterior parts look good.
Any troubleshooting tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
If you pull the latch mechanism out of the door I am pretty sure the problem will be abundantly clear . Sounds like the latch mech. is stripped out where the ext. handle shaft fits into it .
Sorry first thing should have been WELCOME . Now do you have a Truck repair manual , if not get one it will be invaluable in the years to come . If that is a vacuum wiper problem I am sorry but I fix them by replacing with electric , but someone will jump in .
Vacuum wipers can be rebuilt, but honestly it's fairly expensive and their poor performance is legendary. If you need good, reliable wipers, there are many ways to rig up electric wipers. Do you have two wipers or just one? (Dual was an option) You can do an Advanced Search on here for many ideas on how to make your own electric wipers, or slap down the plastic and buy one of the many retrofit kits offered.
I have two wipers. I was wondering, since the wipers worked, and then stuttered and stopped, would this be just a cracked vacuum line? And where does the vacuum line originate? If the line holds pressure, then the motor unit would be at fault?
Vacuum comes off the manifold just under the rear of the carb, and yes, it's frequently rotten or cracked. But the "piston" inside the vacuum motor was sealed with leather to the body of the motor, and is frequently rotted. It could also just need cleaning and lubrication, stuff builds up in there. On their best days they only worked well at idle, going up a hill they would stop dead. There are rebuild kits sold and at least one outfit that rebuilds them: WiperMan.COM - Wipers, Wipers, Wipers
I've never had a stock radio, so I can't say about that, but actually I doubt it has to come out. The wiper is WAY up there. Switch mounts in same place.
No pun intended but vacuum wipers suck . You will find yourself going up a hill someday in the rain and as soon as you put your foot in it the wipers will pretty much quit for a while ,or when passing (not that our trucks ever passed much) ,or , or , or if you take my meaning .
I put in a kit from (Speciality Power Windows) They make a cable type wiper kit . I used them because I only had a single wiper to start with . You will have other options available to you .
I have the same problem with my passenger door.Still haven't gotten a manual yet. I was wondering if a vac. bulb or can would help with the wipers?Mine work but like you say,off idle or so they are done.Do they or is there a 6v system that could be adapted to work?Maybe off a newer vehicle?
The only really good solution to use vac wipers is to put a fuel pump that has a vacuum pump on top of it. These used to be widely available, because they were mandated on vehicles sold in California with vac wipers at some point. Vacuum reservoirs run out of "juice" after a swipe or so, the wipers really use a lot.
That Newport electric motor kit is one of the few that will fit on a 48-50 because of the underdash braces for the immense radio. They sell a 6-to-12 volt inverter to run their 12v motor on 6v (more $$$$).
