I have a 2002 F-150 with a 5.4L and auto trans. When I accelerate from a dead start I feel a "clunk" in the first 1/2 second. I don't hear anything. Also, it has to be from a dead start. If I let off the brake and let it coast a second before accelerating I dont feel it. I thought the driveshaft had some play and this was just the engine taking up the slack but the driveshaft is rock solid. Whats up?
Do search on for this and you will find several messages on this.
In a nutshell......
'lube" your yoke splines and seal on the output shaft (male female) with ford "teflon" grease.
I did and my "clunk" went away. I figure I will have to lube this every 6 months or so.
Do it now before the yoke goes bad.
(YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF)
Just remove the driveshaft at the rear flange pull it out, then lube (mark everything first so it will go back EXACTLY the same).
I had an '88 F150 and and my '00 does the same thing. I just look at like a "characteristic" type of bump. The old p/u never had any problems from it, other than when you took off from the stop, it made a sound like a mild beep from the horn. I would take off from a light and it would make that noise, and people standing on the corner would wave at me like I had honked at them.
