My 02 v10 would have about 6 gallons from when light came on... My 05' 6.0 ran out of diesel when overhead showed 60 miles to empty and no light had come on...
My grandpa always said "just as easy to run on the top half as the bottom half"
Almost right.....but your Grandpa hasnt to deal with rumanian and bulgarian
guys who like sucking big tanks empty at night.
We always have to look under our trucks in the morning, if somebody drilled a hole in our tanks.
So you better run on the bottom half of the tank, better fill just up what you need....day to day
I never let mine get below 1/4 tank. My grandpa always said "just as easy to run on the top half as the bottom half"
My mother always said her car got better fuel milage on a full tank,,,
I would argue with her that the gage was just not accurate and if anything you would get better on the last quarter because you weigh less. She never believed me but she was stubborn like that
I have twice had the light come on when highway and in the hills. Highway was saying about 20 miles to empty this is in a moderately hilly area. Filled up - was 39 gals.
Another time up in the hills and said about 20 miles to empty, went past the 0 (over 27 miles to get to a station and filled up 41 gallons. Remember it is a light and a gage not an absolute. Consider the conditions when looking at the gage and when the light comes on. Flat driving vs hilly areas. I have also filled up with gage showing 1/8 to empty and put in 42 gals. Don't depend on the light or the gage. Diesel is a good thing!
Heck- I've had my Ex for almost 10 years and didn't know they have a low fuel warning light. But then mine is the 6.8 gasser and maybe only DIESEL drivers need one Alright- no flames - just joking !

Us diesel guys need one because we don't have to be in the habit of stopping at every gas station we come to...
As for the question, I get real twitchy when the boss's gets below a quarter tank. Ive seen the light on and 80 miles til empty on the display before though...
Does my 7.3 have a low fuel idiot light? I don't think I've ever let mine go below 1/4 tank - I refill at 1/2 tank. Just an old Army habit...but no I don't "combat park"...
