Have you ever changed your CPS? If not, get a good one from either Ford or RiffRaff. Aftermarket ones tend to be defective. FYI, if you have a 7.3, there's no FICM. You have a IDM. I know the FICM's tend to go bad on the 6.0, at least that's what I've heard, but an IDM doesn't usually go out as frequently.

Best thing would be to have the codes read first. If you have a chip pull it out as well.

First thought CPS . Seen that exact symptom before . Next thought ^ pull chip , seen that also . Oh, pull codes also. I have seen a bad CPS that does not set a code though .

If the check engine light came on it set a code, if you can read the code it may help. Usually generic code readers cannot read the 7.3 codes, but whatever you can get is better than nothing. If you have an android phone and some time, buy a fleabay bluetooth obdii reader and get the Torque app.

Sounds electric. My first thought is also CPS, get one at Ford or IH dealer, better than the aftermarket ones. Easy peasy, one bolt, swap the part and plug it in. Helps to have long arms tho.

If you are handy with a multimeter give the PDF below a shot to check your IDM. Seems like a rash of IDMs killed by water recently.

Could be the harness on the driver side chafing on the valve cover just below the 42 pin connector. Easy to check, pull out the bolt holding the connector together and inspect the wires where they cross the vc.

Could also be a sketchy UVCH connector, check this link for good info on testing that system.

Welcome to FTE!

According to his profile, he has a 2006, so based on that and his FICM comment, I'm moving this thread over to the 6.0L PSD forum.

Stewart

Edit: John, if the OP posts again and I've moved this thread erroneously, please smack it back to the 7.3L PSD forum. Thanks bud.

SO your Working on a 7.3L We got confused

Might be best to go back to the 7.3L Forum

The Principle of operation is just about the same But you need the 7.3L Specs to test against

Common problems on a 7.3L that I can remember off the top of my head that COULD cause driveability symptoms like you describe are as follows:

-CMP sensors (EVERY 7.3L owner knows about this by now, and should have been addressed with FSA 07S57).

-IDMs could be known as "water traps" due to where they are situated, more of a problem on E-Series applications, but have happened on some F-Series too.

-Fuel heaters shorting out, and shutting down the PCM. Usually blows a fuse though.

-IPR valve spool nuts that loosen off and fall into the "valley" of the "VEE".

-UVC harnesses like to vibrate loose, and out of the valve cover thereby causing an open circuit to some injector/glow plug circuits.

And in a nutshell, those are the only 7.3L quirks that I can recall off the top of my head. Just bear in mind as a dealer tech, it's been many moons since I've been under the hood and into a 7.3L due to their age. Also, those are only GUESSES, since I don't have DTC information. And yes, if you have a chip in the PCM, remove it.
