I have a 2001 F350 with a 7.3 diesel and automatic trans. I purchased it about 100,000 miles ago. It is all stock as far as I know. The mileage on it was about 14-15 on the road and I decided to put a chip in it. I was somewhat leary of putting too much power to this old of a rig. I put a TS Performance chip in it. It seems to have more power. I am towing a 30 ft. Gulfstream Seahawk I think around 10,000 lbs. When I started up a hill it made a different noise like a screeching noise when I pushed it. When I back off a bit the noise goes away. When I put it back to stock setting the noise is not there just the normal downshift and increased RPM. Not sure how to describe the noise but sounds like a metal bearing type noise. I get the same rush of air or what ever that sound is when it changes back to a higher gear. Is this sound normal or what might it be. It sounds normal when not pressing it. Thanks!
Thought I had mentioned that it now has 280,000 miles on it, that was my concern about adding too much power. Had considered that it might be a turbo issue but not sure how to troubleshoot a turbo. Guess I need to take it in, but really not sure about the local Ford dealership. Thanks!
Not burning oil although since I put the chip in I did have one morning when I started it I got a lot of black smoke and loss of power then it cleared up after about a mile down the road. It was about 25 degrees that day. Was just on line learning about the turbo will try to check the shaft for play tomorrow. Thanks for the input.
I had a metallic screech noise crop up in my 2002 7.3 while pulling my fifth wheel this summer in hot weather and climbing hills. The fan was already engaged due to the engine being warmer and the outside temperatures. Whenever it would downshift, there would be this metallic screech that fairly quickly went away. It generally would only do it when the fan was engaged.
Turned out to be the water pump pulley had been worn pretty smooth. If you look at the water pump pulley, you'll see that the back side (smooth side) of the serpentine belt drives it. Over time (like 10+ years and 200k+ miles) the pulley surface gets worn pretty smooth.
Ford dealer in CA replaced the serpentine belt and the water pump pulley and no more screeching.
Note that this is one of many possibilities, but at least easy to check.
MTalley, Thanks for the input. Certainly worth checking the pulley and wish it would be something simple but I changed the water pump last year. Belt could be a possibility also but need to check all these things. Will try to check all these this weekend it's supposed to be warmer. Hope its something simple, just got laid off at the hospital where I worked, please pray for our healthcare system.
