Hi everyone,
First time placing a post.
I needed to find out what is the best way to clean my engine to give it that new look again?
I noticed before I bought my truck, everytime I would go to a used car dealer all the engines seem to have been cleaned and then shined with something that looked like armor all but for engines I guess.
Any suggestions on what products to use? Best way of doing it?
I hear some people say that they have gotten some electrical parts wet and then there cars are never the same.
Thanks ahead for any suggestions!
Two simple words: Super Clean. That stuff is magic. Just be sure not to get overspray on the paint or windshield, and don't let it sit on any aluminum bits to long.
I use non-foaming spray-on Gunk on a warm engine, let it sit for 15-20 minutes, depending on how dirty your engine is, then spray off with a garden hose.
They make some spray on stuff called "Engine Shine", that you spray on the entire engine and stuff after it dries.
Now, last week, Pat Goss on PBS's Motor Week, said under no conditions should you use any of that engine shine stuff, because when you start the engine, it sucks all the fumes in, and messes up many of the sensors. True? I don't know. Read the small print on the can.
Buy, Rent, or borrow a Steam Cleaner. Thats what all or most dealerships use.... It doesn't drown your motor one bit and it rips away mud, oil, and anything else stuck to yur engine.
I keep my I-6 very clean. I just go to the local car wash where they have some manual sprayers. Put in quarters, select soap and wash the entire engine, then rinse.
Drive it home and use my air compressor to blow out all excess water from engine.
Then I spray all the engine and compartment with silicone spray and when it dries the complete engine is clean and shiny like new.
I never let it get any caked on grease or dirt for very long.
yes, all modules, ecm, distributor, and all electronics have to be protected. I have heard covering them with a bag works. If you don't feel confident with this then the steam machine is probably your best bet.
I have never ever covered any of my electrical componets at all. I just put in the quarters and turn to soap and spray the engine till its clean. Then switch to rinse and rinse it all off.
Then I drive home and fire up my compressor and blow dry all the excess moisture off.
Then take a can of clear silicone spray and spray it down all over including metal and hoses and electrical componets.
Let it dry then look at your shiny engine.
I will go take a photo and try to post it on my album.
So far my 1996 I-6 has never had any problems doing this.
