I have a 04 Ex with the 6L Diesel, I have a issue with the battery light going on and off. The only problem is that the truck is charging between 13.6 and 14 Volts which should be just fine. Does anyone have any ideas what this problem mnight be?
you could have a diode going, that can turn it on. You can be reading full charge and have a bad alternator. I also had one that had a bad spot in one the commutator rings causing the brushes to bounce at different rpms and turned the light on. Or you could have worn brushes.
At least get it tested. If you have no need for added accessories, get a motorcraft. Most aftermarket builds use the crappy chinese regulators that love to fail. Also check the age of your batteries. Make sure they are fully charged, like overnight, before popping a new alternator on.
If I went with a 200 amp would that be better? I don't believe it would do any harm would it?
200 is even better. Going higher than the stock 110 will not hurt anything. A higher output alternator does not work as hard or get as hot compared to a lower output alternator.
Just get a 320 amp DCPower and get it over with! LivingLarge bought one recently...looks sweeeeeet.
I had the exact same issue with my 05 Ex 6.0L and with the posts here was able to fix it myself. I had the batteries tested first and they were both fine. Took about 5 minutes to change out the alternator and now everything's running great again.
