Towing Questions

We have a '95 Explorer. Looking at the manual, and reading the differential code, it has a max tow cap of 5500 lbs. It has a class 3 receiver, but no additional transmission cooler. We tow, on a regular basis, a 19ft boat (approx 2500lbs) but only 1 mile to our local ramp. Now we are planning a trip with a small tent trailer (under 2000 lbs fully loaded). Would an additional transmission cooler be advisable? Any other tips? Thanks!

While the A4LD from earlier explorers gets a worse rap than the 4R44E that you have, it is essentially an electronic version of the A4LD. Heat is any auto tranny's worst enemy, and anything (IMO) that is built off of the A4LD needs all the help it can get.

98 Explorer 5L with 96K on it--probably 45-50 of those were hauling a 6x12 trailer loaded with racing karts and gear. Never a problem. Just had the trans fluid changed for the second time...keep the OD off and keep it under 90
