I have up grated from an F150 302 V8 too 1994 Ford F250 4x4 7.3 turbo diesel. I like it all but one thing. The mileage I’m getting 12 to 13 mpg. The drive train has 410 gears. I’m looking at going to 373 gears. Has anyone done this? And what do I need to look out for? Is this going to mess with the transmission? What can I expect as for a gas mileage after I change the gear out. Or should I go to the 353 gears?
already have 33" tires done know if I real what to go bigger than that. Ill have to bye new wheels 16.5 or 17. That one reson I wanted to know about changing gears.
First off, 3.73 gears would be fine. My father in law has a 96 F250 'Stroker with 3.73 and auto. It pulls his 5th wheel and boat combination quite well and his mileage isn't too bad.
BUT, you have to change both the front and rear differentials. I do not recommend doing it yourself unless you do it for a living. There are some very critical measurements that if they are not correct, you will destroy the gears and more quickly.
As long as you do both differentials, you are fine. I do not know, but you may have to have the speedometer re-calibrated.
The savings you might see in fuel mileage will never (well, not any time soon anyway) pay for the cost of changing the gears, especially if you have to do both axles.
ive done my own gears.. its a true job.. about 16 hours and many fine measurement tools required.. did not help gas mileage significantly(bout 1mpg increase) but really helped pulling power... you dont have to re-do anything to do with your speedo or trans... just pull the old ring gear off and slap the new one on.. thats the easy part... the hard part is pinion depth and ring backspacing.. its a job
