I have a 1989 Ford F-350, with the 460 engine. Since i got it it has given me nothing but trouble. Currently i am dealing with random stalling, exhaust caps on my vacuum tree getting blown off, and extreme fuel consumption. Any tips would be great. Cant afford it much longer and would like to get to the root of these issues. I recently re-timed the engine after changing the ICM, that is when the vacuum cap issues started. Right before that i changing the ignition switch to correct the stalling, which did for the most part, but still happens randomly while idling, or coming to stop, or even while at cruising speed on high way. No sputtering, just going then dead. The fuel consumption is a recent add to the mix.
Gonna go out on a limb and suggest that perhaps you have the timing advanced out a tad to far, did you remove the SPOUT jumper before setting the timing? Even if not sounds like you went to far, perhaps the balancers outer ring slipped.
Do you hear it popping back out of the intake, blow vac caps off in the process? if so do it all the time or just now and then?
What color ICM did they give you, gray or black? I believe you need the gray one but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
Run the self test and see what codes it has stored.
Stalling as you describe might be due to failing PIP sensor. If popping back or out the tail pipe might extend back to that as cause too, intermittent spark running down the road.
I recently did replaced the timing chain cover, before i did that i moved the engine to TDC. While the cover was off i checked the dots on the timing chain and they lined up, so i don't think the timing is to advanced. Ill bring it back a smudge just to see what it does. I don't hear it popping back, but I sure do notice when the cap gets blown off. Sometimes it'll be a day or two before it happens, other times it'll happen every time i drive.
I think i found the issue of the stalling, at least i hope. I changed the ignition coil, so we will see what happens.
I was given the grey ICM.
Were is this PIP sensor located at? Is there a way to test it?
Im looking online for cost, and im unable to find it sold anywere.
