hi all i have always just assumed i had a d44 in my 79 f250 4x4 but i got bored over the weekend and washed all the toys. well while i was washing the big truck i got looking at my front end. i noticed it has a actual cover that you need to remove to drain the gear lube and get access to the gears.
correct me if im wrong but every other d44 ive had was a drop out like a 9 inch. since this one has a cover on it does that mean i actually have a d60? what things can i look for to help me find out what i have? ive had the truck for a few years i just keep the ebarring greased so ive never had to actually buy parts for the front axle.
Both 44 and 60 dana's have covers. One way to find which you have is to look at the diff where the axle tubes go in. There will be a model # cast into it.. This is the ususal placement of the model #. It is some time around the yoke or any where else they could get it. Hope this helps.
Yeah they both have inspection covers. Go look at any half ton ford front end. If yours is the same size then it's a 44. Once you have seen the difference you should be able to tell by sight.
