Code Reader

What code reader do you suggest for my 97 F250HD? It's OBD-I, 5.8L with the E4OD.

A 97 should be OBD II

Hello MT4x4guy.

Will the code reader work on my 87 5.0L? I do not know what OBD system I have; perhaps you might?

Thank you

87 is an OBD I And from my understanding, when I was actually wrenching on vehicles for a living, the 97 could be either OBD I or II, I have seen both, even in the HD trucks, we had some real confusion going on back in those days and I had to update my ASE certification because of it.

Thank you for the information.

Did you purchase the extension cable as well? Is the manual overall a good purchase?

I should have a code reader in my tools collection.

Take care

My truck is an OBDI, when I bought it a few months ago the shop that did the emissions was also saying it should be OBDII but it isn't. Maybe because it was built in Canada? Either way it's OBD I so any suggestions?

Hello and good morning

I ordered the: Code Reader, Extension Cable and the Haynes Decoder Manual.

The total came to $70.44 which is reasonable as the Code Reader is a must for any tool collection.

Thanks for the information!

You paid way to much, shouldn't have been more than about 30 bucks for the reader and it includes its booklet, "used" about 20 bucks. Even if didn't get the book with it codes are available online and for free.

Extension cable.......eh.....unless included for free? just can't see the need for one, even then doubt I'd bother using it.

Mine came with the cable (got it back in 1998), the only reason I use it is because I'm too damn lazy to stand up long enough to read the codes!!

I suppose they "saw me coming". However, the Code Reader was $24.xx and I also purchased an extension ($24.xx) and I got the manual because I live in an apartment on the second floor and it is easier to just stay with the truck as I have no carport or garage.

The manual works for me better than without.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I was hoping that the price tag wouldn't break the bank.
