HEAT PROBLEM SOLVED

Thought I’d share what worked for me. This last year I’ve been working on the 68 f250 with 360v8. So far I’ve done damn near every type of tune up possible. Furthermore, fixed the bad exhaust leaks on both sides and rebuild the carburetor. All along the truck has always run too hot… I never actually overheated, but it did diesel when turned off. Thing is I always “felt” like the truck was too hot.
This weekend project was to replace the heater and radiator hoses and while I was in there look at the water pump. –Water pump looked pretty good but I replaced it anyway. I think the thing that “fixed” the problem was when I switched the recommend thermostat 195 to a 180 degree. Old Gert is running great now. Thanx for reading

I've run a 180*temp since 1978 an always felt the 195 was to high for these trucks being used as a truck is was intended for. Hauling or towing something.

A good a safety margin for those steep hill the come up while traveling with a loaded down truck, like with a cab over camper an a boat in tow.. Yup 180*stat works for me also..

I always thought the diesel thing was a timing issue????

Running low grade gas can cause it to diesel, too high or fast of idle while shutting off the motor.
Also to much dizzy advance on the timing can it too per-ignition (pinging). Dieseling happens when one of these things is to far out of adjustment.

If a truck is going to be used as a truck then a person should be running or close to the factory sitting to be on the safe side so you don't damage the pistons. Too much per-ignition=pinging slowly burns the surface of the pistons. When this happens you'll find the spark plug inner insulator/tip all splattered with little bits of molten medal, which is off the top of the pistons. An if ignored long enough you'll end up with a hole in the piston..:

For towing in any hilly country ya may want to use higher grade gas.
Cheaper low grade gas burns hotter than higher grades of gas, this is what causes carbon built up to light up like little red cinders that makes it diesel.

Also if the motor is to hot or over heated this can also add to dieseling
these cinders act like a glow plug..
