Maybe using that word assume, I really thought this location was about memorializing those who died working on this section of dangerous lines, up and down the Pass.
Trying find out more, I ran across this picture which I thought was pretty cool. #562.

The Don Toles website is considered the definitive history of Hill 582:

Here's an even better explanation:

"The area has been known as "drawbar flats" for many years. It got that name due to the grade flattens out a bit through the curve and as such trains slow down and sometimes you have to start pulling on the train to keep it moving which tends to break knuckles and if you pull hard enough, will pull a drawbar out.-BMT." A red over green mean diverging - clear, proceed through diverging route...
The more you dig in, the more you realize, how little you know.

And.....
That definition of "red over green" is just the one for the Santa Fe at the time it was published.
There is no universally-defined signal interpretation. Each railroad can have it's own definitions, irrespective of any other railroad.
Can you imagine the possibilities for confusion in the time after a railroad merger?

Went to a second-grader's Holiday Recital this evening, and as we walked in the classroom, the teacher handed each adult a sheet of paper with lines numbered 1 - 50.
"Please write down all the states you can remember".
I couldn't remember Connecticut, but I got all the rest!
Lesson learned.......
Remember Connecticut!

How cool is that. I'm glad to see it's going to good use.
Next will be to bring him along on another RR trip. Looking forward to one soon.
I have since our trip, watched more Hill 582 videos then you can imagine, and one Tehachapi loop video. It catchy one you start.
Nothing better than a big smile!
