Question overhead console message center

The message center quit working on my 99 SD, the dealer wants over $600 for a new one , just so i can be reminded of the mpg i am getting.Does anyone know if a newer one will work or is the same ,the local wreckers have one out of a 2000 for a lot less $ as long as it will work.Or is it possible to get them repaired and if so where?

There is a simple circuit board up there with a "lead" connecting wire that runs to the main computer. It's most likely a bad solder joint. It is an easy fix depending on your soldering skills. Also check the power line running to the unit. A cheap Ohms/volt meter could give you an answer in minutes (Ohms on the board with no power and volts on the power terminals powered.)

I replaced one on an Explorer about 3 years ago for a friend so I am a little fuzzy on the cableing. If you have any numbers showing on the display then power is a given. If not then the power cables would be my first start. With the truck on (not started) and the cables detached from the unit, I would look for a ground/negative cable on the harness. Look for the 12 volt source by using a multi-meter set to detect DC volts. check each wire connector until you get a steady 12V reading. If that checks out then your power is ok. Take the circuit board under a bright light. Use a magnifying glass and a multi meter set to check Ohms and check each of the solder joins for cracks or discolorization (blackish or heavily corroded) many board manufactures coat their boards with a red/yellow or blueish corrosion sealant so don't worry if the board looks like it was dipped in it. If you find one of those items and don't trust yourself to resolder the joint, most guys at Radio Shack can test and repair the joints if you give them a $20 out of site of their boss.
