Fuel pump location
My 86 B2 4.0 automatic surges and hesitates badly. I replaced the fuel filter and noticed something else, under the driver side, tucked under the frame is a narrow cylindrical pump? or? What is this? It has the fuel line from tank plugged in on one end and the fuel line to engine plugged in on the other end plus two electrical wires on either side of the output side. Is the fuel pump located in the fuel tank?

If the pump is cutting out, which is causing the surge, then you might be able to repair the fuel pump in the frame rail. On mine the connector inside the pump had rusted from road salt. I removed the pump, removed the bad connection on the pump, made a new one, and soldered it back on (after draining the pump of gas).
I just did not want to spend the $80 (I bought the truck for $300)and wanted to know what the real problem was without throwing money at it.
I sealed the new connection with red RTV.
