Wild Alternatives to Paint?

I am thinking of building a truck with some sort of different exterior coating than paint. Perhaps some type of DYI spray-on bed liner material? Or a roll-on material? Has anybody done or seen any examples? How did it look? Jag

I like the look of the first one the most. Do you know what the coating is? Jag

I used a tintable bed liner inside the box, it matches the trucks paint. So about any solid color is possible, but metallics won't work.
Can be sprayed, but I rolled mine on.
It's not cheap though, would likely end up costing as much as paint.
Google Hippo Liner.

Some of the tuner guys are spraying their car with plasti dip, It's very easy to apply, you don't even need to mask! It peels off any place you don't want it, glass, trim, head/taillights, etc, or if you get tired of the color, peel the whole vehicle clean. You can clear top it, or add pearl or metallic toners. www.dipyourcar.com

A lot of the hardcore 4x4 guys use the rhino liner on the exteriors of their trucks.

I saw a thread on the HAMB not long ago where a guy had his 56 Chevy wagon wrapped. I did a search for the thread but couldn't find it.

With my limited budget, I am leaning toward a DIY solution. AX, I am afraid of the peal off version you mention. I could come out the store and some kid could have removed it as a prank!

That would be a funny prank...LOL

The old DIY on a budget scenario. Welcome to my world. So far the cheapest and easiest thing I've found is rust.
(I know, not very helpful, but I couldn't resist)

You can get clear PlastiCote and fill it with glow-in-the-dark pigment.

My buddy painted his whole Bronco in grey textured urethane (bed liner). It is always getting attention.

In the aviation industry a simple paint job on a helicopter can cost 20K, the more colors you add the more cash, our last 3 color paint job laid us back a bit over 35k.

One of our competing venders recently began having their aircraft painted base white then having their company specific stripes etc added with a mylar wrap. They have had great results with this so far, if they scratch the paint they touch up the white then the sign guys show up and fix their stripes quickly and easily.

We are looking at using the same system because if you want to change paint schemes all it takes is a heat gun to pull the stripes and the sign guys to slap on new stripes.

I plasti-dipped my fenders and cab just to see what two tone would look like, also have my mirrors and front spoiler on my Vette done too. If you do it this way, make sure you put on several coats and thick, the thicker it is,the easier it is to get off. Also I thought about wrapping it for two reasons, 1) it was cheaper $1500 (been quoted $4500 up for painting)plus a 3yr waranty, 2) I could change the color or theme every 3yrs in case I get bored with it. With a wrap, you can come with any design and color combo you wish. Just make sure you find a reputed wrapping business with a warranty, good luck. Here's a few pics with the plasti-dip,L8R ZFLASH
