Ha! You know what you are correct; PIPES and Brent. So appreciate all your guys help. If I didn't have FTE - can you imagine how much this truck would have cost me by now.....down right scary.
Hmm..that's weird. Makes you wonder if you shut it off today right after the light came on....if it would have been ok. So the other 2 times the light came on...temp was good and you kept on driving?
Anyway...sounds like that was the problem. great advice Brett! And Bigpipes! Lol

Only difference between today and prior two days, is as soon as the light came on I shut the truck off, sat a few minutes then restarted it, and yes I drove it after that between 5 - 20 miles, light stayed off and didn't come back on until next day. Today when light came on I keep on going, and within 1/4 mile the temp gauge was pegged. As soon as the light came on I looked at the temp gauge it was maybe 1/4 way up, within 20 seconds it was almost all the way hot.
Christina, You have the right thermo now and if the water level won't stay at the line have the cap checked at O'reillys. Maybe you had the other thermo upside down or just having the o-ring seal on the wrong side will mess it up. That fail-safe feature is good to have since your engine was actually overheated .Glad you got a handle on it.
Here is some interesting reading on that bottom valve I mentioned; ARE Cooling

I didn't touch the thermostat during the coolant change though. I just opened the bottom drain valve, drained until it stopped, topped with distilled water, started briefly, repeat, repeat, repeat until I got nothing but distilled water out of the drain. I know wasn't exactly the instructions on how to do it, but was multitasking at the time and did the mini version. IDK if my "lazy method" added to my thermostat crapping out in short order, but I agree - I think it's fixed and lesson learned on all your issues with this and I didn't even bother with an aftermarket thermostat. Will watch my level the next few days and if it drops will have O'Reilly guys test the cap for me.
Fail-safe or limp mode; First the oil light comes on, then when the temp gauge gets to the middle it jumps right to pegged on hot, then if you keep driving it will start running on 5 cylinders and only go about 40 MPH. If you pull over it will still be idling on 5 but if you shut it down it will all be back to normal when you restart it but the cycle will start over again in a few miles. When it runs on 5 the other 5 just draws air and cools those down and then it switches over (trades places) with those 5.
