differential going out
i was told by a mechanic that my differential is going out and thats why its making a loud vibration when i step on it in 3rd and 4th so heres my question how hard is it to pull apart my ford 9 inch and change the 3rd member(im guessing thats what im supposed to do to fix it) and how much and how many ford 9" differentials are there in a junkyard. Im not exactly sure what gears i have in ine but i think they might be stamped on the end of the gears or maybe the tag is still right on the pumpkin

Even if the ratio or tooth-count isn't stamped on the edge of the ring gear (it always is), you can count the teeth and divide ring by pinion and get your ratio. Or just look at the AXLE code on your door sticker.
If the vibration is ONLY present in 3rd & 4th, it might be in the transmission. But it's just as likely to be the u-joints in the driveshaft as it is the diff.
