My temperature gauge in the original instrument panel does not work (no surprise there it seems) and has not worked since I purchased the 55. I can install a new modern one under the dash as I have seen done on many trucks. I do not wish to take the instrument panel off and open that potential can of worms as of yet. Why are there so many under dash gauges out there in the trucks? Is the instrument panel replacement difficult (I am limited in electrical and most everything else)? Are original panel gauges hard to find or expensive? Why so many under dash installations? I have most everything stock, but the under dash gauge would be ok if the other replacement is difficult.
Many of the aftermarket temp gauges are not electric, they have a capillary tube and bulb. So they won't fit in a stock dash. Replacing the stock gauge (if it's really bad) is easy, if you don't mind laying on your back. I would check the wiring before anything else.
Original gauges were never known to be of a high level of accuracy. They're more an indicator of a problem happening than a true representation of operation. Many folks want to know a bit more precisely what their temperature is so they opt for a graduated aftermarket gauge.
I found this one on Sacramento Vintage Fords web site for $79, Im sure other popular vendors also cary them. But like preveiously mentioned, it could be wiring or the sender.http://www.vintageford.com/Products/08187-20.jpg "EDIT" sorry the link dosnt seem to be working but its on there site. best of luck.
So what do you think a fair piece would be for a working temp gauge? I'll probably let it go for a good deal, plus shipping because I have 3 extras. Long story over here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ctureid=142026
Hey Abeagle,
We've got a '50 so it might be different but we also
wanted to change the "temp sensor" for our heat gauge.
Not sure if you are doing that one but our's was filled
with liquid - Mercury? I don't know what it was but I would
be cautious if you are pulling that end.
Thanks for the comments. Never thought about the mercury - don't need quicksilver rolling everywhere. It seems that an underdash aftermarket will be best rather than removing the instrument cluster and opening up problems that might give a novice like me. Should wiring that in be any problem?
