I got a 86 f -150, and whenever i go to start it, it makes sort of like a buzzing sound. Thinking it is probably the starter. Never took one off before, just wondering if there is any special tools i need or anything i need to do? Thanks for any help
Check the voltage from the red battery wire (on the clamp or the starter relay stud) to the engine block while it's buzzing. Then test across the ACTUAL battery posts (not the wire clamps), and use a screwdriver or something to make a clean shiny spot for the test terminals. If the voltages are more than 1/2V different, you have a poor connection somewhere.
Hey Muddin
My 84 did me like that at the gas station. I turned it off and after that she fluttered when I turned the key. Flutter and buzzing could be the same. Come to find out after a lot of looking and head scatching I found that the positive cable had a bad factory connection at the connector which attaches to the battery post. I replaced the cable which had been recently replaced with another one and she fired right up. So look around before you pull the starter. But the starter is not a big deal, 2 bolts and remove the cable and its off. Get the parts store to check it out.
