Steering gear condition help

I have removed the steering gear and taken it apart and this is what I have. I do not know much about gears but I assume this is not usable correct? There appears to be paint on the gears or maybe it is just baked on grime. Is that normal?

It looks like it was packed in grease once upon a time. Soak them in some parts cleaner or brake fluid for a day or three and see how much comes off. As long as they mesh properly and there is no binding, they should be usable. Mine looked something like that, minus the thick grease and they seem to work fine. Like everything else on these trucks, the gear box is simply made and takes lots of abuse.

Mine was similar as well. I replaced, because the "dead center" location was actually worn thin enough to visibly see. If you don't have that, I would say you are good.
