I bought a 90 model 2wd a month ago and still have not run a whole tank of gas out. Tried everything, all new tune up, new headgasket, almost all the sensors nothings helps. Sometimes it runs ok gets me there and back but most times its coughing and hacking. It always starts but depending on what phase the moon is in is how well it runs. Thinking it might be fuel pump but it has two tanks and runs about the same on both tanks. I'm at a stand still now and don't know where to go next. I'm tired of working and buying part to no avail.
Try to pin point what system may be causing the problem (fuel, air or electrical). Does your problem keep occuring at the same fuel level or when going up/down an incline? Does all of your emissions equipment operate correctly? Is the alternator charging and is the spark getting to each plug? What is the condition of the spark plugs?
Personally I need a bit more information to help narrow in on your issue.
I don't know how to narrow down what system is causing the issues that's the problem. Nothing that i do makes a permanent change. it runs good for a day then can't pull it's own weight the next. It has a new alt but i did not install it, but I have noticed when it run better there charging gauge on the dash says charging more than when when running bad. There is no check engine light and I was told this model truck doesn't have diagnostics. Right now I'm in the process of checking for shorts in the wiring. As for as spark plugs go I have replaced almost the entire ignition system short of the distributor.
Thanks timber steel for the suggestion, I pulled the ecm it has several blown or burnt capacitors. Ordered a new one I'll let yo know how it works out.

You were told wrong, ALL computer-controlled engines have diagnostics even if they don't have a CEL (which a 1990 should have I would imagine, Ford started that in trucks in 1988).
ctubutis is right My neighbor had a 1990 with a 6 cylinder and it had a a eec in his i have a 88 with one to. but boy sometimes when it comes to that computer junk I wish they werent. I'm really old school. like em simple.

Don't get any simpler than counting flashes on a light/reading a number and looking it up in a book. Although, it's easy to become distracted from the obvious by all the technology... ~Bill
bill is right ... the computer is your friend. if you try to ignore it you are just going to throw all kinds of money away on parts that were working just fine.
when we first got my truck down in Cullman, AL, it ran fine at the dealership. But while following my dad home (he was in the tank) SHTF. The ole tanker bogged down and would rev past like 1.3k rpm. Our solution to this problem was that we dropped the front fuel tank (rusted) and replaced the front and bought a new rear. then replaced the fuel filter, FPR, plugs, wires, distributor cap, and button. A new o2 sensor and gutted the cat. Now she runs fine. If you haven't checked your tanks and fuel filter i would do so. Also check all your grounds off the battery terminal, and check fuses. I'm trying to help haha.
EDIT: the reason it would bog down is because the filter would get clogged with rust from the tank and wouldn't run right. but while sitting at the dealership, the rust settled in the tank allowing the fuel to pass thru as intended. After fueling up, or sloshing the fuel in the tank the rust would be in the gas, and not settled anymore.

Reason: Not to double post, and i forgot some information.
Hey Lewis90i6 I don't Know how bad your tanks were rusted on in the inside? But mine were rusted pretty good on the inside. But what I did was used 4 sacks of marbles from the dollar store. Had a buddy help me shake the holy crap out it. then rinsed it out with soap and water. Let dry and vacuumed it with a shop vac. That is A trick my buddy taught me. and saved me alot of dough in new Fuel tanks.
