I have a 53 Custom Cab. It has a Ford heater. Or at least the heater has Ford embossed into the case. I removed the four screws around the side vent yesterday. After I removed the kick panel I pulled out what appeared to be a block off plate. The plate was pan shaped and sealed with caulking. I plan to install an aftermarket AC unit (have not decided which one) and I am not worried about originality. I prefer a smooth look verses the vent. Is there any reason I should not eliminate the vent?
That vent before the passenger door was the fresh air pickup for the magicair ( the fancy, non recirc heater).
You'll want either that intake or some mod to the pop-up cowl vent for whatever system you put in there. Or you can try your daily driver running 100% recirc and see how you like being bottled up.
Usually fresh air taken in, shoved thru the A/C and up thru the defroster is the most effective at defogging.
'Midnite, don't all aftermarket A/C's recirculate inside air? '
Yes as far as I know, my comment was that FRESH intake is a bonus for defogging.
'How would you connect with side vent?'
This depends completely on where the A/C's fresh intake is and your fab skills. Flex ducting (ie from a Mc Master catalog or similar) might do most of the 'run' but the snorkels on the ends might be a fabrication.
'Where do factory units get outside air from?[FONT=century gothic]'
Most modern autos swallow fresh from the base of the windsheild.[FONT=courier new][FONT=arial]
