Okay ya'll I need some help here. As luck would have it hubby has been extended till Novemeber (navy currently deployed) and I need a truck now!
What the truck will be used for is:
Hauling horses (most likely a 4 horse stock trailer) appx 4-5000lbs
Hauling hay
Maybe even a cross country move...hauling a horse trailer or my 79 Bronco and my husbands 77 F250 w/ a gooseneck
So what would be better? Are there any suggestions? I am thinking a 99 or 2000 model...don't know if a F250 or a F350 matters but hey that's why I am asking...HELP!!
I would look no further then the Powerstroke, a 350 (1 ton) if you can find it but a 250 (3/4 ton) will work just fine. With the PSD you will not be under powered and the hubby will love you for it.

Some call it a six-pack, I call it a support group.
I have to agree. I used a V-10, F-350 today. I swapped trucks with a fellow contractor for a few hours and was glad to give it back. It sounds like a 6 cyl. and has absolutely no ability to move weight w/o pushing the accelaerator half-way to the floor. I'm not sure why Ford even made the engine, except as a sales gimmick for the Viper crowd. The guy who had my truck now swears he's getting a powerstroke. He couldn't believe the difference.
With what you are towing go with the diesel. That V10 will be sucking gas and you will be thanking yourself later. Trust me. Also the Powerstroke will last you twice as long as the V10.
F350, PSD. DRW. and with what your hauling I might even consider the 4X4. I think that long term you will be alot happier and keep a little more money in your pocket. Although once you get to playing with these things money become relavent.
Fordzgal,
I purchased my '99 F350 for pulling my 4500-5000 lbs boat/trlr and it pulls like there's nothing back there, I have to glance in the mirror to make sure Mine is 4x4 to get up the ramps by the river etc. would recommend. It is Single Rear Wheel (SRW), but If you plan to pull heavier trailers in the next 15 years then get DRW. Happy shoppin'
Fordzgal.
I agree with the posts conserning the diesel choice, I would go with a 350 for gooseneck hauling and 250 for a tagalong... But it's funny, you post in a Powerstroke Diesel forum asking what's better, diesel or gas.....What did you expect for an answer??? I looked in the V-10 group for your question but didn't find it... I think it would be interesting...If you do post there, be forewarned, those guys don't know what they're talking about on the gas vs. diesel question.....Here's where you get "just the facts ma'am, just the facts"....Anyway, good luck with your new diesel....
