Ok, so when I sheered off the left side dually lugnuts, not knowing they were left handed, I inadvertently cracked the rim at all 5 areas between lug nut hole and hub hole. The rim seems dangerous and useless now, moreso than when it had no cracks.
I found a local Goodyear guy here in Daytona who not only will work on split rims but also thinks I should put the truck back together the way it's supposed to be. I tend to agree with him and am relieved actually to find a split rim guru. So, I'll probably sell my Eaton HO axle, my Dana70 axle and the M300 front axle as well as the 6 rims/tires that came with the latter. Those tires are 8x17.5LT.
I am now looking for an original rim for my 1947 Ford flatbed dually. Should you know where I might find one, please contact me...
Thanks, Bill in FL
If you look at the back rim lip of the damaged wheel there should be a five digit part number there, assuming it's a Budd product. If you post that number I can look it up and may have a wheel, or at minimum can help identify what you need. Stu
As I'm still in the middle of replacing the brakes all around, the tires are all off. I'll look for some numbers on the rims when I get home today.
Chuck at Chucktrucks suggests there are many type rims, that they are hard to find nowadays, and that I should have a machinist repair the cracked rims.
Probably very sound advice.
I used a 4 foot pipewrench from work and still had to bounce on the very end of it to sheer those off. The replacement from Mac's are already back in the drum...
The part number on the wheel will tell me which outer ring is correct for the rim. From your description it sounds like the ring is unhurt. I may have a wheel missing its ring which might allow use of your original ring on the replacement new wheel. Normally I caution against this, but if you have the numbers, and they match a wheel that I have, it might work. Stu
Thanks, Stu. I'll get back to you later on that. Yes, I've read, and been told, about NOT mixing parts, but let's just see what the numbers say!
