question about pulling a trailer

my g/f bro cuts grass, has a 16 foot trailer with a big mower, and med. mower a push mower and some equipment in the back of the truck, its a 02 or 03 f-250 lariat 4x4 ext. cab with a v-10 and an automatic. most of the trucks these days have automatics. his truck does not have the tow haul thing. like my bosses brand new f-350. my question is when he is driving around pulling a trailer like this should he turn off the overdrive. and should he just use up his brakes on his truck or should he down shift the automatic ( he has no brakes on this trailor. he is looking to buy a trailor with brakes this summer though). anyway, i want some opinions on the whole overdirve and downshift, deal. personally if i bought a truck to pull a trailer of any kind. and do real work with it, all i'd have is a manual. just my preference

question about pulling a trailer

Automatics are great for towing, and it sounds like that trailer isnt that heavy as for as towing. As far as overdrive i would not engage it below 60 mph[my opinion] some say its ok.Turning 4000 rpms is nothing for a V10.Dont downshift, all it is doing is being hard on the trans. There are some people here who pull very heavy loads w/autos.Trans coolers are reccomended.
