Wink Engine Cooling Fan

-What would cause the clutch to lock the fan up causing it to run all the time? -engine IS NOT overheating.

Yes, sometimes the clutches go bad.

Thanks guys! I was actually asking the question pertaining to an International DT466 engine in a 4300 DuraStar truck that I drive at work-its a Penske lease truck and the stupid mechanics at Penske can't seem to fix it, they must not test drive to see problems reported for themselves.
They DID replace the fan clutch, it has actually made the problem worse-the fan used to cycle, but now, like I said its locked-up solid.
I am starting to suspect possibly the TStat causing some of the trouble because today I shut it down for about 15 minutes and when I re-started it after fueling the temp was way down around 140*-it couldn't have cooled from 190*ish to 140*ish that fast.

Are the fan clutches "handed"? as in rotation?

Is the fan running all the time a problem? Or just obnoxiously loud?

I'm not being smart, I swear. I'm actually wondering if the fan running all the time could hurt anything.

It hurts fuel economy.
Is it an Electric clutch, or Air? Both use a temp switch that can go bad.

Does it have a manual override in the cab to manually turn the fan on ?

YES, a fan like this huge one running all the time causes a drop of 1-2 mpg in fuel economy (possibly more)

It seems to just be a BIGGER version of the fan clutch that is on our 7.3s -guessing its an "air" fan then?

Don't think there are any wires coming from the clutch or a manual switch in the cab.

what would cause the engine temp (according to the guage) to drop from at least 190* to around 140* while the engine was OFF for only 15 minutes?

The cooling system is full of coolant, and I even swapped the cap from MY truck to see if possibly it was the cap-no change.

~50* in 15 minutes without circulation? Not likely to have happened. An over-sensitive temperature sending unit would cause that reading. The only way to verify temperature is to have a thermometer (or gauge)in the system.

Hard on an engine running too cool.

When you shut down a hot engine, it does what is called heat soak. Heat will soak from the hot metal into the coolant and you can see a temp rise. This will open the thermostat. Now when you restart the engine, the therostat is wide open and cold coolant is drawn from the radiator cooling the engine faster than the thermostat can react and you will see a rapid temp drop.

An air clutch would have a air hose connected to the back side of it. That hose would lead to a valve that is controlled by a temp switch, high pressure switch on the AC, and an optional manual switch in the dash. They are used on trucks with airbrake systems or where there is compressed air to operate them.

Electric clutches opperate the same way but will have wires into the back side.

If you are having this problem with a viscous clutch like on our trucks here, then you may have a faulty clutch. I have had problems with aftermarket clutches on cars.

It may be engaging the fan clutch. I've driven a few internationals that run the fan and unplugging the ac makes it go back to normal.
