struck steering wheel

I have been reading a bunch of posts on pulling a steering wheel. Several suggest that you will need to Drill and tap two 1/4" holes. There does not seem to be much meat for those holes. Is that the only way? I have tried pb blast and beating on it. I have wiggled it back and forth. It does not budge. I could use some suggestions.

Thanks for any help ,
John

In my steering wheel there was 4 "stock" holes 2 where already threaded, maybe by some previous owner.

Mine also didnt have any holes. I pretty much ended up destroying the wheel trying to get it off, but i was planning on getting a new one anyway. I think drilling will be your best bet.

I just took my steering wheel off to centralise it. Wiggling did not work. I drilled and tapped two opposite 5/16" holes (about 1/2" deep) and screwed in two threaded bars, then drilled a piece of angle iron for the bars to go through with a washer and nut on the end of the bars. I put a bolt in the steering shaft hole to protect the thread and put a socket between the angle iron and shaft and tightened the nuts evenly. It released with a satisfying 'pop'.
Good luck.

I have tried something similar without the drilling. I set up a couple of wood blocks below the wheel with 3/8"threaded rod running from there to an angle across the top. I ran a 3/8 threaded rod into the shaft worth a but and washer to sit on the top of the shaft threads and another nut to hold the angle off of the wheel then I tightened the side nuts evenly. After applying a fair amount of force I beat on the end of the center rod to encourage it to release. Also used pb blaster. Nothing gave. I guess tomorrow I will try to tap some new holes but after today I may just have to cut the wheel off.

Go buy a cheap Harbor Freight steering wheel puller
Take the silver 4 prong hub and use it to mark 2 holes across from each other as close as you can to the column shaft - Drill and Tap for a 5/16 bolt, which comes with the set

The Advanced Auto store in my town let's you borrow a puller for a $20 deposit returned to you upon return of the puller.

Should of thought about them - I just borrowed a Pitman Arm puller last week - Had it about 3 hrs - It was $16.90 rent/refund - I even gave them their dime back so I could get even money

Don't know if it was the pb-blaster or using the right tool (bought a $10 puller from Napa) but it came right out. For the next piece, Can I take the pitman a nut off with an impact wrench of will I damage something?

You should be OK using a impact wrench, However after you get the nut off you are going to need a Pitman Arm puller - They can be rented free form most of the AP stores

I used a puller from the local auto parts rental fleet....the wheel didn't budge after I applied a lot of pressure, so I just let it sit with that pressure on it and it popped 10 minutes later.

Well the nut came right off with the impact wrench. Now on to the pitman arm puller. I have it on and tightened down as far as I can take it. Nothings budged. I wonder if I can use the impact wrench here too? I'm guessing I will break the puller but I've already tried pb-blaster and a hammer. If it has not popped by tomorrow I will have to try the impact wrench.
