transmission went out in my 92 F-150...aod transmission...trbl is it won't shift above 2nd...i did change fluid, filter and flush tranny just because when you call transmission shop they ask if you've done that....still no help...believe trbl is with direct drive portion, feels like trys to shift but nothing there and shifts back to 2nd...a rebuild is necessary, my question is, is it all the difficult to rebuild a tranny with proper documentation, instructions, etc....and if so where is best place to purchase kit...time isn't an issue have another vehicle to drive in the mean-time....thanks
redwar29, I have rebuilt a couple of transmissions, all different, so I can say that IMHO it is not difficult. With the right manuals, a full tool set and some mechanical ability most anyone can rebuild one. There are some specialty tools that you will need to get or make. For parts kits try www.bulkparts.com, I have had good luck with them. Look in your local phone book for a transmission parts house. They can be helpful with heavier parts, like the torque converter, that you may not want to pay shipping for. I have had good luck finding manuals on ebay, just a suggestion. I started playing with transmissions last fall by taking a class at the local vo-tech, I had such a good time I took the class again. Good luck.

I've see quite a few of these trannys do this. A rebuild is the only answer. The lock-up clutchpack is gone so drive and od will not work because the are locked when engaged. You can check your TV cable going to the throttlebody, It must me hooked up. This usually isn't a problem on the trucks, but it is good to check it anyway.

PS, it isn't electronically shifted is it? OD OFF button on the shifter?
thanks for the info sdawgz....replaced torgue converter 50,000 ago, was gonna do the complete overhaul then, but chickened out...thought about the voco classes also, but haven't seen them offered....have the haynes manual on ford transmission overhaul, seems pretty informative....and nope not the aod-e...just plain old aod, tv is connected and adjusted, checked that also, looks like i have a project now, may do engine too, 220,000 and using oil worse than ever, but not first of them i've done, so confident on that...thank y'all
