Good morning everyone!

Lots of ring and pinion action going on around here.

This one came out of my F150:

Can anyone guess where this little guy came from?

Yup, that would be the one. Lack of lubrication caused a gear to chip, and the ensuing chaos munched up the rest.

For anyone interested in mechanical carnage:

2013-11-09 Sienna Differential Failure Slideshow by tomboy376 | Photobucket

The F150 got the same 3.73s that it had before; it was warranty work to correct a gear whine between 50-55 MPH when under throttle. The interesting part is that it's still whining! Going back to Seraphin Ford later this week for them to check it out.

Wasn't full of anything! Badly underfilled from the factory; when the dealer pulled the drain plug nothing came out. I don't think that's rust either, but I'm no expert.

72,000 miles on the van, and it's only three years old.

Copper?
Amazed that it would make it 3 years and almost 75,000 miles if it was empty from the factory!
Should go the distance now.

Good Morning Folks,
Finally got finished with rebuilding oil cooler and installing oil bypass filter.
Spent a lot of time under the cab with a wire brush and rust converter paint while waiting on the oil cooler parts. Hope it helps!
Did oil change with Mobil 1 5W-40 and installed Fumoto Drain Valve. Today will finish up with greasing the front end. Gotta get some Fluid Film on Monday. Saw Kahn's Tractor on the list of local vendors. I don't live too far from them. Looks like good weather until Tuesday. Hope to go back to work on 11/18. Neck surgery seems to have been successful.

Take Care,
Jim

I can't say I thought of it either. But my big car trailer was loaned to someone else for the week and AAA won't tow it twice for the same issue, so I was open to ideas. Another highly knowledgeable FTE member whom I've known for a few years has the same AWD system on his Venza and made the suggestion. You could vaguely hear a slapping noise at lower speeds but that was about it; when I pulled in I honestly questioned whether or not they would even detect a problem. Of course with the fuse installed it couldn't be missed; it shook like hell when under throttle!

And hell no they didn't cover it under warranty; that was over 12,000 miles ago. They agreed to cover $750 of the $1500 bill though, and I'm waiting for their check. I'm gonna pursue this a bit further though, as this was an assembly error I feel they should cover the entire cost. We'll see.

Well, that was a awesome tip from him! I can't believe the lack of oil in that diff !!! No sighns of leaks throughout its life I assume. I'm also surprised the repair was only $1500. I would pursue the issue a bit more myself. Seems they should use your unfortunate experience as a tool for future issues. Guess thats why I'm not in charge of that kinda stuff. LOL. Half the cost being covered is a start, but my guess is $1500 was onlt the start of your grief

Nope, the service department was at a complete loss to explain what happened. I maintain the car myself and am meticulous about maintenance. Gear oil leaks are always obvious because the stuff just doesn't wash off. Attached is the invoice if anyone is interested.

Rear diff leaks ARE one of the more obvious, I agree. Had one or four in the truck through the years Seems a little suspect to me. As I said before, seems like a worthy pursute to me Tom. Glad you shared this info. Keep us informed of your dealings. Very interested to see how this plays out. The oil either had to go SOMEWHERE, or it just wasnt there!! Seems the later may be a more real scenario.
