Rear axle smell puzzler

Hi Everyone! Hope all is well in this Halloween evening. Here is the puzzler:

Rear wheel drivers side I was experiencing an intermittent smell. So I decided to replace the rear axle seal and as it turns out I remove the wheel and the seal stayed on the axle housing. i was thinking, "YES" nailed this.

Remove the seal from the housing, cleaning everything up and drove the new housing in the wheel. Put everything back and for several days al is well then the odor returned. WTH I though. Could it be:

1. Improper seal install
2. Burr or some oil leak issue
3. I have no clue and need a meeting of the minds.

Any ideas.

Thanks again for everything!

If it smells like a burning clutch you have a brake hanging up! I just went thru this this week!

A dragging brake will smell 10 times more if there is oil on it. Feel around to see if anything is hot next time you stop.

Everything is hot! Both rear wheels brake drum are hot the same actually. I spun the wheels before I change the seal and there seemed to be to dragging.

At first I thought is was parking brake on the rear drivers side but that look great and no rubbing at all.

Should I take it apart again?

Did you clean the oil residue off after installing the new seal? All the brakes and hardware need to be cleaned to get rid of the smell.
