2000 Ford Excursion 7.3
2000 Excursion 7.3 Limited 4x4 just under 245k miles.
This rig runs great, right up until last night. Started loosing power and running rough. I was able to run the RPM up enough to limp her home. Checked codes and got PO 720, PO 673 and P1316 I am running the SuperChips 1705 MAX Micro Tuner set on HP.
Thanks!
Welcome aboard!
Sorry to hear the rig is sick...
But that is typically how/why people find us.
Right off the bat...
Im going to point my fat fingers at the under valve cover harness that links the injectors/idm... and glow plugs/gpr.
They have a habbit of coming disconnected, pins burning out.
To address the issue you will need to get the cac tubes out of the way so you can pop the valve covers. Usually... if its a uvch issue at the connector... a simple squeeze on it to click it back in place does the trick. A lot of guys will recommend doing the 50 cent mod.
If you come on down to the 99-03 7.3 forum... The Brotherhood will be glad to get you sorted out.
Again...
Welcome to FTE!

I decided to take the drivers side valve cover off and check the connection on the valve cover gasket and sure enough it was ever so slightly gapped which was causing it to run great cool then after it warmed up the connector would seperate and run like a old John Deere "Poppin Johnny"! Upon further inspection the connector was partially melted so to be safe I decided to replace the Gasket and harness on both sides. I called my local Auto Zone to get a price and found out they had the Dorman brand set for around $72 which included the harness, valve cover gasket/connector and the exterior plug/pigtail. Dorman, however, is made in China so I decided just to be safe I went to my local Ford Dealer and bought the parts from them. My logic was, if the original lasted 242K miles then I wanted the same quality. Even at my jobber cost it was $278 so I spent a bit over $120 for dealer quality. Can you imagine my surprise when I opened the Motorcraft box pulled out the harness and there was a great big "Made in China" label on the wiring harness! Oh well, the quality looked good yet from now on, no more dealer if possible! After listening to the forums here, I only took off the turbo and air cleaner pipes and except for a bit of a challenge getting a couple of the valve cover bolts off everything went very smooth. She runs really well once again.
Thanks again to all here who's advice was very helpful. Now on to my son's 1999 Explorer project!
