Warn told me they don't make ANY auto locking hubs. Maybe they do make Ford's but they don't sell them to the public. I like automatic stuff. I think getting out to lock hubs is kinda old timey. Of course, if I did a lot of off-roading and the autos failed a lot, maybe I would switch to manuals too. To me it sounds kinda like old carb guys not wanting fuel injection, though. If you talk to the diehard carb guys, they'll tell you fuel injection is no good. When in reality, that's not the case.
i haven't had any problems yet with my auto hubs. if you read in the owners manual there not made to shift into 4 wheel drive on the fly unless their already engaged. you still have to stop the vehicle(you just don't have to get out to lock them), pull the lever or push the button then go. if you don't disengage the hubs when switching back to 2wd then you can shift back to 4wd while moving. the reason these auto hubs break is from shifting into 4wd while moving with out the hubs already locked, thus the bang when they go in. i cringe at the thought of that bang. as for the durability of auto hubs vs. manuals for extreme offroad use i won't argue about the fact that manual is better.
jarrod316,
The owner's manual specifies that if you have the lever actuated transfer case, you have to stop the vehicle unless the auto hubs are engaged. If you have the pushbutton 4WD, you can shift into 4X4 at any speed upto 55mph. The auto hubs will lock at any speed.
Warn did make automatic locking hubs once upon a time, but that was long ago, and I think they were for the Landcruiser. I don't doubt that they make the OEM auto hubs for Ford, but they definitely won't sell them to the public.
a quick question for the experts concerning the auto locking hubs on
my 93 F150. Interesting noise happened this past weekend concerning the 4 wheel drive lockup/disengage process..Backed truck up into muddy spot in parking lot,got stuck..With truck in park, shifted into 4wheeldrive high with manual shift on floor. 4 wheels engaged, pulled me out of mud, then backed into another spot still in 4 wheel...When i left, i put truck in 2 wheel drive while in park..pulled onto highway, noticed the "chatter"coming from front hubs, realized that hubs not disengaged, slowed down to pull off to side and back up to disengage them, before i could reach total stop(approx 10 mph) LOUD "clunk" from front drive area, sounded like i picked up a chunk of metal with the tires and they flew it up underneath truck!! It was loud...Thought for sure i damaged something...stopped,backed up,proceeded home,,,everything fine...tried 4 wheel same day, worked ok...What did i hear? any damage? thanks to all the experts who respond to this forum...learned a lot....
well, i feel like an *** now. had my first problem with the auto hubs and i haven't even been using the 4wd. driving home from work yesterday made a left hand turn and i hear what sounds like stripped gears in an eletric drill then a BANG that could be felt through the whole truck. with the bang the wheel jerked out of my hand. guess its obvious what that is. can i take back my last post here? i was dead wrong. these auto hubs are junk. i'm installing warn manual hubs this weekend. sorry for the mix up in my last post i should have read further in the manual before posting my message.
