I've got a '70 with a 302 that has started to make an alarming 'knocking' sound. I can't yet tell where it's coming from, it started rather suddenly (this morning it was running damn near perfectly) and seems to have been accompanied with some oil loss (not a lot but it was full this morning and is now down on the stick about a 1/4 to 1/2 quart. Initially it sounded to me like it was coming from the top end so I pulled the valve covers off and everything seems in order up there. Planning to do a compression test later this week but from here I'm thinking bottom end. Any way to easily check that besides pulling everything apart? I've always ended up with other reasons to rebuild a motor before I ever had anything actually fail on me so this is a relatively new experience for me.
When you do the compression test do a dry test per cylinder then a wet test each. Right after you do a cylinder dry then do the same cylinder wet. Recording both numbers if they are different. Dry will check upper engine and wet the lower.
So on a whim I took the inspection cover off the transmission which seemed to make the noise louder, perhaps a torque converter/flex plate issue?
True story. A cracked flexplate can make a nasty sound as it's flexing. See if you can feel or see a crack in it. If you have to jerk the tranny out to replace one of the two now would be the time to put a higher stall torque convertor if you plan on putting in a hotter cam soon.
Turns out one of my nuts on the torque converter had stripped and back itself out, apparently noone here has 3/8" Grade G, Fine thread nuts so I had to order some in from a Fastenal in Florida, should be here Monday and I'll know for sure if that was my noise.
