Getting ready to install an oak bed wood kit in my 48f1. Any opinions on what is the best treatment for the wood? The truck will have a show-quality paint job, and stainless steel bed strips. Not just a shjow truck, but will not be used to haul much.
Search for a thread called "BEDWOOD" by REG1952 it was posted about 9/30/12a year ago. Had great info in it-- I have a hard copy but can't get the tread to link
Put a new bed in my 55 a few months ago. Just be sure you seal all sides and edges after staining. If not, sun will cause moisture problems in the wood and it will not last but a year or so in decent condition. It will not be worth your time, effort and money. It is amazing what new bed wood and strips will do for the look of your truck, Have fun with all the bolts.
I've had satin finish Urethane Marine Varnish on my bed wood for over 25 years and it looks as good today as when it was put on.
I use the same stuff as you did, Marine spar varnish, it works great. I put many light coats on to allow deep penetration with a light buff sanding between coats. It pretty much lasts forever.
You might want to check the edges of your SS strips as mine were razor sharp. I took a flat file to all of my edges to keep them from digging into the finish and unsealing the wood(at least that's what I presume the result to be).
