Regen how often is too much?

How often should a new truck regen? I got 550 miles, 620 and 810 so far. Seems it always wants to regen this is getting a bit rediculous. Im running power service additive in every tank

That's ridiculous??? Be thankful you're getting that much. If you're not towing, those numbers are almost unbelievable.

In suburban city driving (lucky to hit 40 MPH for more than 30 seconds at a time), I get between 60 and 110 on summer fuel, and 110 to 250 on winter fuel.

Besides, a regen isn't that big a deal. 11 minutes or 11-12 miles is all it takes. Burns an extra 0.4 to 0.5 gallons of fuel during the process.

So the owners manual and ford dealership is a lie at 500 miles?

I find that it is directly correlated to "where" I buy fuel, and the amount of highway driving I do. If I buy other than name brand or do a lot of "in town" driving, my truck regens a lot. If I'm running name brand diesel and highway driving (luckily most of the time), much less regen. My two cents.

That would be a good average for many people. It isn't a fixed thing, it depends on the fuel you buy and how you drive. Personally I could care less how often mine regens as long as my mileage doesn't begin to suffer. I do however make the effort to keep my rpm's up while driving around town by locking out 5th and 6th unless my speeds will exceed 40mph and locking out 4th as well when driving at 30 and under.

My Ford diesel supplement manual says 100-500 miles. Does yours say something different?

The fuel must be very different in TX. Here in Michigan, no one I know with a 6.7 gets 500 miles between regens unless they are towing, UNTIL we make the switch to winter fuel. After that, normal driving (not stuck in traffic) will show up to 300 miles between regens, 500+ with highway driving. BTW, I've found that many 6.7's force a regen at about 600 miles whether needed or not.

At 810 miles, you most likely missed one when it was happening. The truck will automatically do a regen in the 600 mile range whether it is necessary or not. Also, the more miles your truck racks up, the more often you will see a regen as the filter will get some buildup over time and lose capacity. Short runs and city driving greatly reduce the amount of miles you can get between active regens.

I don't think mine has ever made it 500 miles.
I made it slightly over 400 miles two weeks ago with half towing.
Soot stayed between 2.30 and 2.55 for almost 150 miles. It would creep up, burn off and repeat several times.
I make it around 200 miles on average with about a 0.9 MPG impact on the tank and worse of I have two.

Higher RPM's will create more soot. That's how I force a regen when the soot GPL is close, say 2.62 or so.

Fuel could well be very different, I know it varies a lot from station down here. Around Waco, the Flying J seems to have the best fuel and some stations the fuel is really poor, you can tell the difference in how the motor sounds and the mileage is radically different. BTW I didn't say my average is 500 but it well could be ( I really don't pay any attention) as I do a lot of highway and towing, very little town driving.

He doesn't make it clear, but I think he means the total on the odometer, not miles between regens. He's got himself all twisted up over regens.

Interesting thread, at least for a diesel newbie.

My new '13 was delivered with 1800 on the odometer and now shows 2230. I have not seen a regen yet, but I drive 6 miles to work .... a regen could be an inconvenience if it occurs right before getting to the office.

If your only going 6 miles to work the engine isn't warmed up enough. You will be getting a Drive to clean soon. Unless you d o get it on highway and get a good regen in.
