Guys I've got another problem. the guys at the parts store are saying that ALL 351 and 400s have a valley pan. this motor does NOT have one. Is there any kind of performance gaskets you can buy that does away with the valley pan?( that was the parts guys idea) Or is there any 400 motors that don't have a pan? I found a casting number on the block that reads D4AE-B2A I'm fairly sure the D4 says it's a 1974 block. but I have no clue about the rest of the number. the heads have a number that reads D5AE-BA. So I'm thinking I have a 74 block with 75 heads. Can anyone here give me anymore info on these numbers? the stroke measured 4" but now I'm not sure what I do have here. any help would be great. Thanks! Ken,

This is the design number.

D4AE-B2A
It was orginally designed for a 1974 Large Ford car(which is what the 351M/400 was designed for) and it has had several change-ups (B2A) [original would have been -A]

You should see another group of numbers/letter that look like this
ie: *6C22 *
Every cast piece of metal will have both sets of numbers/letters

These are the more important numbers.

I see a number on the top back of the block behind where the intake would be that reads 4H28 does that sound like what your talking about. also I always thought it was a car block. it has a hole in the right front side of the block for a dip stick tube. thanks! Ken,

Sorry I don't have your answer, but your question leads me to wanting to know how you found out what engine size the truck came with. Where can I get the info to decode the VIN. I have a 73 F250 with the wrong engine in it.

Just post your rating plate info.

Starting with the 11 digit vin# F25????????

The digit following the 5 is the engine code.
