I had a small leak in my 1991 Ford Explorer power steering pump. Nvever could quite find where the leak was but knew it was above the steering box. Replaced it over the weekend, it whined a little bit, but besides that it was fine, I thought. I did some running around in town before making about a 100 mile trip back to school. Before I got on the interstate i checked the level and it was fine. Everything was going great until i nearly go home and i noticed that the whine was gone, thought it just broke in. When i got off the interstate and made the first real turn i could tell there was very little fluid left. I pulled over and could barely see the level in the resevoir. Everything was wet under the hood, wheel well, and down the lower half of the door back. I filled it back up and came home. With some help i turned the wheel back and forth with the engine running and could not spot a leak. However, with the engine off and turning the wheel hard you would get a shot of power steering fluid out of the vent hole on the cap. I have no idea where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
With that much power steering oil in the area under the hood I would presume that you have a high pressure hose leak or close to it. Can you get someone to turn the wheel from side to side with the engine running while you have a look for the leak? You may have to clean up the area now to see it but hopefully you will.
