Need Some HELP!!

Kind of new to this site, but I just got a 1954 f-100 pickup all orginal as far as I know. I was wondering how I can adjust the carb. It has a 292 y block V-8 with a Holley 1835 2 barrel carb. it idles good but sounds a little fast, but when you drive with the throttle half pressed it spits sputters and jerks unless you hold it to the floor. the transmission is the standard 3 on the column and top speed of about 50 mph. Also can I eliminate the cross pipe and cap a header and run duels or will that mess up back pressure and compression. any suggestions?

Welcome Bama!
I would suggest a shop manual for reference. Bogging down under acceleration typically points to a vacuum leak.

Thanks for the help FortyNiner. I did find a small leak on the gaskets on the carb leaking, so I guess I gotta buy a rebuild kit and gives me a good excuse to clean the carb out!

Y-blocks engine sizes are difficult to identify, but if your 54 has the original engine, it would be a 239 CID. If memory serves me right, the 256 CID came out in 1955 and the 272 followed in 1956. The 292 came after that in the F-100. 239-312 Y-Blocks all look alike, but a lot of them have been rebuilt and have remanufacture plates attached to the lower left side of the block. These engines do not care if there is back pressure in the exhaust system, so you can easily eliminate the crossover pipe and install duals.

thanks ranger pat I only got the size from googling the numbers on top of the manifold I was told it could either be a 239 or 292, the plates are no longer visible so I just went with what I could figure out by searching the only number I could find.

Welcome!

So it idles fine, WOT is fine, but mid-range is dead? Or is it only accelerating that causes problems? If it has a power valve like most Holleys, that is a likely suspect. It will leak extra fuel into the engine making idle poor unless high, and generally runs rich.

I believe the holley 1835 is a 2110 series carburetor, nasty pieces not well designed and age hasn't improved it. It needs rebuilding, ive done a few and they are kinda easy to go thru. If your carb has the large base i would replace it with a 2300 series, 350cfm. Big improvement.

Trucks: 239: 1954/55 / 256: 1954/55 / 272: 1956/59 / 292: 1957/64.

Holley 2V's used on 1954/56's are referred to as "teapots" or "flame throwers" or "toilet bowls" by those in the know, were a POS from day one.

You cannot bolt a 1957 or later Holley 2V on 1954/56 intake manifolds as the "teapot" has a different bolt pattern.

Ah, the Towering Inferno?! I believe the Rochester GM 2 Jet bolts on without adapters, they are excellent. Some adapting of linkages etc needed tho.

So does it use a power valve?

The teapots where 4XXX series if i recall right, so somebody has already replaced what has to be considered an exotic experiment by holley per Ford engineers. Somebody has already replaced the OP's original with what might have been considered an improvement.
The 'teapots' are the duckbilled plattypusses of carbs, closely followed by the venerable 1904 with the glass bowl.
Yes, the rochester and a few others will bolt right up.

can't say anything about the carbs but here's some advice on tightening it down to the manifold... you hold the nut with the correct sized wrench... then have two (any two) of the Crimson Tide offensive line come over the turn the truck under it...

R O L L T I D E !!!

Welcome to FTE
