purchasing 2001

I'm considering purchasing a 2001 (5.4 limited 2wd). It will be used for towing my Tige 2200i boat (about 5500lb with trailer). So that should not be a problem, but I wanted to ask about a couple of things...

On my Sub, it has a list of option codes on a sticker that I can decode and see exactly how the truck was built. Is there an equivalent on Fords?

The options I'm interested in are any optional axle ratios that affect towing capacity and limited slip.

My understanding is that all Excursions have the towing package. (this one has a hitch, wiring and a tranny cooler, but I can't see if it has an engine oiler cooler).

Any particular areas I should look at on the truck? It's going to have very little factory warranty left, so I need to find any problems quickly.

Thanks

Crap... I'm glad I read the owners manual before I took the plunge... The owners manual says the towing capacity of a 5.4 4x2 is 6200 lbs, that's less than my '95 Suburban 1/2 ton.

Oh well, time to start looking for a V10 or diesel.... (10,000 lbs)...

I didn't want to burst your bubble, but the best use of the 'small' motor on the Excursion OR the Superduty is to hold your boat in a specific place on the lake................. you will want something with more grunt no matter what you are towing - even if you don't tow, I'll never recommend that engine option to anyone - friend or foe..........

I just went and test drove a V10... what a difference, according to the computer, it's about 1 mpg worse than the 5.4, but the engine is smoother and it feels much less strained....

From what I understand, the biggest mileage 'gain' you will notice (or maybe LACK of LOSS of mileage) will be when you tow with the V10 - it shouldn't drop as much as the 5.4L. I have the Powerstroke, and would recommend it if you are going to tow a bunch and plan to have it for awhile - otherwise......... well....... I'd have to know you better to recommend it since it is a money pit from the word go. To be fair, the only money I HAD to spend on it was the initial purchase price ($4,000 give or take) - the rest was on 'goodies' I just had to buy for it. I've no recollection of anyone not liking the V10, just diesel owners REALLY liking their diesel.........

This is going to be my wifes daily driver, and I don't think she'll appreciate the diesel character... So I thik I want to stick to gas

For the price diff of a diesel, I can buy a lot of gas...

I would agree........ My wife doesn't want to drive mine much - suits me just fine, but isn't always an option for some people - you'll both like the X for trips and as a daily driver - good truck!
