clutch, slave cyl. and pressure plate install

My slave cylinder is leaking and i want to change the clutch, slave cyl and pres. plate on my 95 ranger 4x4. Is it really necessary to remove the trans and transfer case entirely or can I disconnect them from the bellhousing, cross member and drive shafts and slide them back about 5 inches? It looks like i will have enough room to work. Anyone out there done this job before? Any tips/ warnings would be appreciated. THANX
