Hi all! I need to replace the throw out bearing in my truck this weekend. I have a 4X4 '72 F100 with a 390 and the 4 speed manual transmission. I have never done this replacement before so I'm wondering if anyone could offer me the least painful way to go about this. Should I just spend the money to rent a transmission jack and drop the transmission completely? Is the fact that the truck is a 4X4 going to make this more difficult in any way? Any advice that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Josh.
I just use my 3 ton jack, it should work as long as you are on a surface where it can roll. Since the transfer case is divorced, there should be enough room to just slide the transmission back, but I haven't been under my 4x4 in a while to confirm this. While you are at it, replace the clutch and pressure plate. I screw 2-4 in. long rods into two of the tranny bolt holes, this makes lining it up a whole lot easier. Let us know how it goes.
Everything came apart no problem. Ended up having to remove the exhaust pipe in order to have enough room for the transfer case to slide back. When I disconnected the front drive shaft I discovered that my u-joints were pretty bad so I'm replacing all those as well while I have everything apart. Hopefully I can get everything back together by wednesday or thursday night.
